Susie’s Book Nook - New Children’s Book Review: ‘The Earth Book’

Introducing Todd Parr, an author and illustrator of dozens of wonderful books for children. This month let me feature one of his New York Times bestselling books, The Earth Book.

I can spend hours in a book store or library perusing through the shelves of books searching out just the right one for whatever my current project or interest is at that time. When it comes to seeking books for young children I am drawn first to books with vibrant color and illustrations that might seem simple at first glance but have a more poignant meaning. Hence, what first attracted me to Todd Parr’s works.

All of Todd Parr’s books are filled with simple illustrations, some cartoon-like, in vibrant colors that truly represent the variety of colors and flavors of our world. At the same time, he teaches his young readers what is possible, what they can do, how they can make a difference, and how they make our world a better place for all. There is a real inclusive feeling nurtured within the text and illustrations.

I loved Mr. Parr’s approach in The Earth Book where he uses “I take care of the earth because….” with children throughout his story. We hear from a child’s perspective that the simplest of actions can have a profound effect on things that matter to them and help our planet. How about this one: “I remember to turn off the lights and shut the refrigerator to save energy because…I love the polar bears and I want the snowmen to stay cool.” All the examples from children in this book are wonderful starting points and easy to follow through ideas to keep our earth healthy.

I first discovered this book many years ago when I was doing a Kids’ Camp on Environment at our church. This book captured the interest of my elementary aged campers then and led to some meaningful discussions on what was happening to our earth. At that time my campers made commitments to make a difference in a variety of ways that they felt their families could easily undertake. The book includes a tear out poster that can be displayed in homes or in classrooms to be reminders of easy habits that can be reinforced and become lifetime habits that benefit our earth home.

You’ll also find surprise touches of humor which delighted my campers. These touches enlivened our discussions in lots of different ways. You’ll have to check out one of the benefits of recycling and #10 on Mr. Parr’s “Go Green Poster” that is included in the book.

Better yet, check out Todd Parr’s website and YouTube videos. This is only one of many books of his books that will delight your children and give you numerous conversation starters with your family on relevant topics for today’s children.
