Susie’s Book Nook - Children’s Book Review: “Into the A, B, Sea” by Deborah Lee Rose
I was put on the trail for this particular book actually by the author, Deborah Lee Rose. Deborah found my Book Nook and wanted to introduce me to her newest book, Penguins Ready to Go, Go, Go! Well, off to the library I headed and checked out several of her books that were available for me there. So, this month let’s start with, “Into the A, B, Sea” by Deborah Lee Rose
Once again, I tested this book out with my favorite preschooler these days and he confirmed it’s a “read it again, Grammy” book. This book has such a fun way to reinforce the “ABCs” and learn about many wonderful creatures that fill our seas. Starting with Anemones sting and Barnacles cling we move through the ocean’s depths to where the Yellowfin dive and zillions of Zooplankton thrive. You can allow yourselves to be thankful for healthy seas where Kelp forests sway and Leopard sharks prey. And be amused where Octopuses hide and Penguins glide.
Clever and creative rhymes introduce us to all the sea life which are delightfully enhanced by the artwork and illustrations by Steve Jenkins. Big, bold and colorful drawings capture one’s imagination and excitement bringing this story of the sea alive for its readers.
This book as many of Deborah’s other books are written with STEM curriculum in mind. STEM being an educational approach that integrates the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. With that in mind, our author includes interesting facts about each of the sea creatures and sea life mentioned in alphabetical order at the back of her book. An excellent resource to encourage the readers to appreciate the amazing habitat of the sea and special traits of the sea life in this book.
Into the A, B, Sea is also a great book to read with your children before a trip to your local aquarium. Of course, I am spoiled living in Monterey and being able to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium as often as I like with my grandchildren. We may not be able to find all the species in the book at the aquarium, but whale watching and tide pooling are easily done on our peninsula. This book like many others can springboard us into involving our children and young people into tactile experiences in the nature around them. This can then further encourage preservation of our planet’s beauty and richness. Now more than ever we need to make preservation of our earth a priority for the generations that are to follow.
I would encourage you to check out your own public library for books by Deborah Lee Rose or check out her website. She has written numerous books that appeal to many ages of children and young people….and some of us adults as well. I could go on and on about many of the books I have read lately by this author. Maybe I will do another review of one of my other favorites in the future.
